forty-two year NASA career in September 1962 as an astronaut
in the first group selected after the “original seven”.
He is the first person to fly in space six times from earth,
and seven times counting his lunar liftoff.
While he receives most recognition as one of the elite group
of 12 moonwalkers as Commander of Apollo 16 in 1972, he remains
an outspoken advocate and visionary for the continuation of
manned space exploration not only as a valued consultant to
NASA on the next generation of space craft to return to the
moon and on to Mars.
