Katherine has spent the last eight years researching, speaking and writing
of courage. Two ground-breaking books are the result of her work:
Women of Courage: Inspiring Stories from the Women Who Lived Them
and Women of Spirit: Courageous Stories from the Women Who Lived Them.
The books feature first person stories from the famous and the not so
famous. Stories from Isabel Allende, Dana Reeve, Marianne Williamson,
Faith Popcorn, Judith Orloff, Judy Chicago, Sarah Weddington, Mary Pipher,
Riane Eisler, and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray. And from Geraldine Ferraro, Iyanla
Vanzant, Judy Collins, Joan Borysenko, Julia Butterfly, Wit star Judith
Light, SARK, Cherie Carter-Scott, and many others.
Through her books, sold-out theater performances, lectures, public appearances and
media interviews, Katherine provokes a new conversation about courage,
busting myths, getting real, and empowering people to live their lives
boldly and authentically. She is the Courage Counselor at iVillage.com,
the pre-eminent women’s website. Katherine hosts a lively Courage
Board in the relationships channel where conversation focuses on courage
in intimate relationships, with family and with friends. She also
contributes articles and excerpts from her books, and writes advice columns.
An award-winning screenwriter, Katherine co-wrote an original Showtime
movie and an independent feature film starring George Segal. She
authored Non-Impact Aerobics with fitness experts Debbie and Carlos
Rosas and has written cover stories and profiles for the San Francisco
Chronicle, Esquire, Ms., Parents, Working Mother, Women’s Sports &
Fitness, and numerous other national magazines. She was the senior
editor of New Realities magazine. Katherine lives in Portland, Oregon
with her husband.
Do you think of yourself as courageous? Do you know someone who is? How
do you define courage? I had a sliver of a definition, just a sliver, when
I started writing a book about courageous women. Talking with women - and
men - about courage has been enlightening, surprising, humbling, enlivening.
Courage is a strange and magnificent, a curious and complex thing. It may
be full of noise, it may be mouthy and messy, but it may also be a quiet
thing, intimate, even fragile. At the core of courage, the very root of
its language, is coeur, from the French ... meaning heart. And here, you'll
find the heart and soul of courage. I hope you'll look around and consider
your own courage.
In Women of Courage
forty-one women, including Isabel Allende, Dana Reeve, Marianne Williamson,
Faith Popcorn, Judith Orloff, Judy Chicago, Sarah Weddington, Mary Pipher,
Riane Eisler, and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray tell their original, personal,
and at times startlingly vulnerable stories.
From CEOs to celebrities to welfare mothers, from Manhattan to rural Georgia,
from 11-year-olds to 78, these women captivate and change us.
Women of Spirit continues Katherine’s
exploration into the depths of courage and celebrates women who listen
to their intuition and the call from spirit to be true to themselves and
women who take spirited action to claim more of who they are and make a
difference in the world.
Judy Collins, Geraldine Ferraro, Joan Borysenko, Judith Light, Julia Butterfly,
Iyanla Vanzant, SARK, Cherie Carter-Scott Lynne Franks and the 32 other
women, known and unknown, remind us of the tremendous courage it takes
to lead authentic lives and honor our relationship with spirit.
