Joel Kotkin
Joel Kotkin   An internationally-recognized authority on global, economic, political and social trends, Joel Kotkin is a John M. Olin Fellow with the Pepperdine University Institute for Public Policy; and a Senior Fellow with the Pacific Research Institute. For three years, he was Business Trends Analyst for KTTV/Fox Television in Los Angeles where, in 1994, he won the Golden Mike Award for Best Business Reporting on the changing dynamics of the entertainment industry. Mr. Kotkin is a contributing editor to The Los Angeles Times Opinion Section, a columnist with The Jewish Journal, and a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Inc. Magazine, where he served as West Coast editor for five years.

  In June 1997, for Pepperdine University Institute for Public Policy and La Jolla Institute, Mr. Kotkin wrote the report “Southern California in the Information Age.” He also co-authored, with Stephen Levy, the Center for the New West's Spring 1996 report, “California: A 21st Century Prospectus,” and edited Pepperdine University Institute for Public Policy's October 1996 report, “The Emerging Latino Middle Class.”

  He is the author of four books: “Tribes: How Race, Religion and Identity Determine Success In the New Global Economy” (Random House, 1993) which traces the connection between ethnicity and business success -- how in-group loyalties are becoming the driving force in the new global economy. “Tribes” has been published in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and German. He co-authored “The Third Century: America's Resurgence in the Asian Era,” (Crown, 1988). His book, “California, Inc.,” (Crown, 1982) deals with California's links to the emergent powers of the Pacific Rim. Kotkin's first novel, “The Valley,” was published in 1983 by Bantam Books, and he is currently working on a science fiction-oriented novel set in Los Angeles in the 2030's.

  Mr. Kotkin lectures widely in the United States, Japan and Europe and has addressed both Democratic and Republican Congressional groups. He has testified before the Joint Economic Committee of the Congress, the State of California Economic Strategy Panel and is highly sought after as a speaker by many major business and financial organizations. In addition, his numerous commentary and opinion articles about global competition, the importance of ethnicity and the new economy of cities have appeared in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Magazine.
