Earvin Johnson Jr. may best be known for his winning ways during his illustrious
13-year (NBA) career, but today he directs his efforts toward his growing
business empire, Magic Johnson Enterprises.
In California, Johnson oversees a variety of subsidiaries of MJE including
Johnson Development Corporation, Magic Johnson Theatres, Magic Johnson
All-Star Camps, Magic Johnson T's (a T-shirt licensee of the NBA, NFL,
NBL, and NCAA), and his latest venture, Magic Johnson Entertainment. Under
the production banner Magic Johnson Entertainment, Johnson will produce
and develop feature films and television properties for Fox Family Films.
Johnson hosted a one-hour network special for Fox as he sat down for one-on-one
interviews with Whoopi Goldberg, Garth Brooks and Shaquille O'Neal. He
cohosted Nickelodeon's award winning broadcast, “A Conversation with Magic.”
His most successful venture, Magic Johnson Theatres, was created with partner
Sony Retail Entertainment. He has also opened a multiplex in Atlanta, with
plans for Magic Johnson Theatre expansion in major cities across the country.
During his NBA career Johnson achieved unparalleled success, leading the
Lakers to five NBA championships and nine appearances in the NBA Finals.
He won three league MVP Awards, played in 11 all-star games and was a member
of the original Dream Team that won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in
Barcelona. It was while at Everett High School that he earned his nickname
“Magic” from Lansing, Michigan sportswriter, Fred Stabley, Jr..
Magic produces an executive camp that welcomes men and women over the age
of 30 to enjoy the rigors of an “NBA training camp” under the tutelage
of Johnson, Jerry West and some of Magic's former Laker teammates. As important
as any aspect in his life, Johnson is actively involved in numerous charitable
and community organizations. In 1991, after testing positive for HIV, Johnson
founded the Magic Johnson Foundation, a non-profit organization which directs
its efforts toward HIV/AIDS organizations throughout the country. He raised
over $10 million for the united Negro College Fund, while assisting the
Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Starlight Foundation, American Heart
Association and the Urban League.
