Bernie Siegel
Bernie Siegel   Bernie Siegel, M.D. practiced general and pediatric surgery in New Haven, Connecticut until he retired in 1989. Siegel started ECAP (Exceptional Cancer Patients) based on “Carefrontation”, a loving, safe, therapeutic confrontation that facilitates personal change and healing. Publication of his first book “Love, Medicine & Miracles” in 1986 and “Peace, Love & Healing” in 1989 redirected his life. Siegel is now involved in humanizing medical care and medical educations as well as traveling extensively with his wife, Bobbie, to speak and run workshops sharing his techniques and experiences. Life would be simpler if we were all born with the answers to our questions and had support when we needed it. Bernie Siegel helps us in this difficult task, challenging us and making us think. In this lecture, Bernie shows us how to look into our hearts, listen to ourselves, draw on our strength and that of our loved ones, and confront our difficulties in a healthy way - whether they be illness or any other of life's serious problems.

In his surgical practice and support groups, Bernie Siegel has developed a unique approach to working with people facing chronic or catastrophic illness. The disease is no longer a sentence but a redirection. His therapeutic approach is aimed at the integration of body, mind and spirit. Dr. Siegel explores the role of hope, love, and spirituality and unconscious beliefs in the healing process, focusing on the work of Carl Jung, Milton Erickson and Joseph Campbell. He discusses the importance of resolving conflict and the need for unconditional love in one's life so that all energy can be directed towards healing and the realization of one's authentic self. Drawing from his extensive experience, Dr. Siegel outlines a model of the ways that “exceptional patients” respond to the crisis of an illness by assuming control oftheir lives, developing a fighting spirit, achieving peace of mind, and actively participating in the doctor/patient relationship. The disease as a symbol of body-mind relationships and the dream-body concept will be discussed.

Using a slide presentation. Dr. Siegel will show how dreams, images, and drawings done by patients reveal their unconscious feelings and beliefs about themselves, their diseases and their treatment, which in turn affect the course of their illness and their lives. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their dreams, do drawings, and interpret the symbolic and hidden aspects of conflict and illness in their lives. During several experiential sessions, participants will learn to use imagery, meditation and auto-hypnotic techniques to facilitate the healing process.
